CSM hosts geothermal symposium
In Colorado, the Colorado School of Mines played host to two hundred guests from four different countries and ten different states at the second annual Geothermal Symposium. The latest developments in global geothermics were presented by renowned, international guests. The first speaker, Siguður Magnús Garðarsson, the director of the Icelandic GEOthermal Research Group (GEORG), spoke about Iceland’s long history in geothermal energy development and its success. In their latest project, GEORG is drilling 4-5 km deep to temperatures between 450°C-600°C to obtain supercritical fluid with a higher energy density. Others discussed ongoing work on volcanic areas, CO2 sequestration and ground source heat pumps.
