Tenders opened for first geothermal exploration wells
In Yemen, tender offers have been opened for the drilling of the first exploratory well for geothermal energy in Yemen. The project, in the Allisi area, Dhamar province, is designed to assess geothermal energy resources for possible power generation. Previous work included surveys of some 100 locations where geothermal energy sources might be found in in the country. Between 2007-2010, geological, geothermal, geophysical and geochemical studies and Radon gas measurements were taken in the first promising area, where drilling will now take place. The project is in collaboration with the Energy Research Center in Italy and the Natural Sciences Institute in Germany, with funding from the Global Environment Unit of the United Nations.
